Ra was one of the most prominent gods in ancient Egypt. He was symbolic of the Sun and was regarded as the creator of all life forms. He came to be associated with Earth, Sky and Sun and later, also with the netherworld.

Gradually, Ra and Horus merged with each other. Thus, Ra as represented with the Eagle head of Horus with a solar head dress on his crown. In this form, Ra also subsumed the goddesses Hathor and Isis. He was called Ra-Horakhty. Hathhor was believed to be his daughter.

Ra was believed to carry the Sun across the sky in his barrage and at evening, underneath the horizon to the netherworld. Thus, he was also believed to take the Pharaohs after death to the netherworld.

The main temple of Ra was at Lunu, which began to be known as Heliopolis during Greek occupation of Egypt.
