The European Commission is calling on its residents to save energy as much as possible with the prospects of energy crisis looming on the horizon.

“The more you can do to save oil, especially diesel, especially jet fuel, the better we are off,” EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen said on Tuesday, after a meeting of the EU’s 27 energy ministers in Brussels where they discussed the bloc’s energy security. Jorgensen called on Europeans to follow the advice of the International Energy Agency and use more public transport, “increase car sharing and adopt efficient driving practices.” The IEA had earlier issued a multi-points proposal to conserve energy.

The energy crisis is likely to destabilise the industrial operations, especially the heavy industry.

Oil and gas prices have spiked high since the US and Israel began their conflict with Iran in February end. According to the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in only the first 10 days of the conflict the Europe lost €3 billions in fossil fuel imports.

Although Europe takes only 8% of its total oil and gas via the Strait of Hormuz, if the large population of Asia chases this supply because of severe shortage then European supply may get disturbed.

At this point, nothing can be said with clarity.
